Whenever blindfolds are being used, in essence, one of the partcipants senses are being removed. It is therefore very important that an adequate space is cleared before commencing with these activities. It is always good practice to have some people that are not blindfolded to help stop any collisions and accidents. The particpants that are wearing blindfolds should be encouraged to be sensible and to walk around slowly with their hands slightly out in front of them to act as a gentle cushion incase they collide with anybody else. All activities listed are conducted and particpated in at your own risk!
Blindfolded farmer
For this blindfolded game all you need is some blindfolds and some carrots. You need to spread the carrots around the area that is to be used. Teams work in pairs so that one of the members can verbally guide their blindfolded farmer to collect the carrots. The pair that collects the most within the given time is the winner. This blindfolded game should be at least run in two rounds so that both parties gets to have a go.
Blindfold art
You will need a flip chart or large paper, marker pens (preferably not permanent) and of course a blindfold for this activity. Theparticipant who is blindfolded decides what to draw and the rest of the team have to guess. You can start nice and easy but then as the game progresses the blindfolded drawings can become more and more obscure and complicated
Whos missing?
During this games one member of the group wears a blindfold. Everybody else asssumes a place in the room. The blindfolded player is allowed to look around at where everybody is before putting on their blindfold. They then put it on and the facilitator spinsthem around a few times. Whilst this is happening one person leaves the room. After a few spins, (dont go over the top, the blindfold can be removed and the team member has 30 seconds to name who is missing. If they get it right they can swap places with the person who was missing. If they are wrong they have another turn wearing the blindfold.
Blindfold line up
There are several variations to this simple but great game. All the group have to do is line up in a particular order when blindfolded. The group put on their blindfolds and they have to organise themselves in;
a) - Height order b) - Shoe size c) - Date of birth d) - Alphabetical order
The possibilites for this simple blindfolded game are endless!
Blindfolded hide and seek
This is hide and seek with a twist. All but one member of the team are blindfolded. The team member that is not wearing a blindfold hides and it is up to the rest of the team to work collaborativley to find their hidden team mate.
Voice in the dark
One member of the team wears a blindfold whilst sitting on a chair. The rest of the group take it in turns to walk up to this person and say anything that they want in a disguised voice for 30 seconds. The group member on the chair need to guess who is speaking. If they guess right, then they swap places with that person.
Blindfolded trust walk
This is great for getting group members to trust each other. The group work in pairs and simply take it in turns to guide their partner who is blindfolded. The pairs generally start cautiously and then get more adventurous. It is a great exercise to start with if doing lots of blindfold activities.
Blind tight rope
This is not as dangerous as it sounds. Group members take it in turns to walk the length of a rope that is placed on the floor. The participants should take their shoes off for the activity to work best. If they step off the rope then they must take their blindfold off and go back to the start. If you have two ropes its a good activity for two groups to have a race. Just make sure the pieces of rope are not too close, to save people blindly stumbling into each other.
The tent challenge
This is a great activity, but the challengers must be sensible. The challenge is for the team to be given a tent and whilst they are blindfolded they have to put it up. The tent should be a simple tent to erect. If needed the group could familiarise themselves with how to put the tent up before they put on their blindfolds.
Blindfolded egg and spoon race
Working in pairs to stop people bumping into each other, this really is an old classic reinvented. It is a good idea to spread out the particpants as much as possible. Even with a buddy to look after them the blindfolded particpant is unlikely to keep a straight line for too long!
Robot and controller
A large area should be marked out. Inside this area there should be some sheets of newspaper srewed up into balls. Group members should work in pairs. One of the pair should put on their blindfold before entering the area. They are the robot. It is up to the controller to guide the blindfolded robot to where there is a ball of newspaper, direct them to pick one up and then to throw it at another robot that is in the area. Once hit with a ball of paper that robot must remove his or her blindfold and leave the area, making way for another pair to particpate. Its best not to have too many robots in the area as when the balls of paper are thrown you dont want anybody to get hit with flailing limbs!
Perfect shapes.
Make a large loop out of a piece of rope and place it on the ground. The instructor should tell the group what shape they need to make whilst maintaining contact with the loop at all times. The team should make a plan and then kneel down. They should then put one hand on the rope, lower their blindfolds and then they can stand up and initiate their plan. When the team think that they have the perfect shape they should place the rope carefully on the floor, all at the same time and then remove their blindfolds. This game can be played with loads of different shapes. If the group are not succesfull the first time get them to re-evaluate their plan and try again. It amazing how accurate groups can be with a bit of practice.
Blind sheep dog trials
Mark out an area which will be the sheep pen. Two of the group members should be designated the shepherds and between the group, before putting on any blindfold, a code should be decided to direct the blindfolded sheep. Once a code has been decided the instructor can ask the sheep to put on their blindfolds and then carefully walk the sheep to their starting positions. The shepherds then take over and one at a time , using the code, get the blindfolded sheep into the pen. This exercise can be made as easy or as hard as you want. Difficulty can be changed by a) whats allowed in the code, eg no words - only sounds b) by the distance the sheep are placed from the pen
Artistically blind
One member of the group wears a blindfold and is given a large piece of paper and a selection of coloured pens. The other group members take it in turns to describe a picture that they have. It is up to the blindfoldee to try to follow their directions to enable a duplicate picture to be made.
Blindman's Buff
A very old blindfold game with records showing that it was played as early as 2000. The game consists of one of the group being blindfolded and having to tag another member of the group. Very simple but a great blindfold game classic
